    Abstract

Most paediatric malignancies can be cured with conventional chemotherapy. Autologous stem cell transplantation makes it possible to dramatically increase chemotherapy doses and cure tumours that were resistant to conventional chemotherapy, such as high-risk neuroblastoma and metastatic Ewing sarcoma. High-dose chemotherapy and autologous transplantation are major tools in treating patients who have very high-risk malignancies. In patients with brain tumours, it aims at improving prognosis and decreasing sequelae. Maintenance therapy has been developed to follow high-dose chemotherapy and treat minimal, persistent, residual disease.
