    Abstract

Malignant tumors in newborns and infants are rare. In France, 190 new cases are diagnosed each year in children less than 1 year. The most frequents are leukemia, brain tumors, and neuroblastoma. Clinical presentation, histologic types, biological behavior, response to therapy, and prognosis are different from that of older children. Genetic susceptibility is frequent and need to be investigated for genetic counseling. Multidisciplinary treatment is required in expert centers and will include the physiologic and psychological needs of young children. The majority of these cancers are of good prognosis, and treatment is based on conservative surgery eventually in addition with age-adapted chemotherapy. Spontaneous regressions have also been observed. In poorprognosis cancers, such as rhabdoïd tumor and neonatal leukemia, new therapies are urgently needed.
