Abstract

Introduction: The World Health Organization has classified cancer as a chronic disease. Patients suffering from cancer are increasingly receiving home care. It requires the involvement of several healthcare professionals and a very complex organization. In this context, implementing a therapeutic patient education (TPE) program seems justified. Goals: However, due to the complexity of developing such a program, we considered an a priori risk management culture to fully secure the TPE program. This project has investigated “The a priori risk management of the therapeutic education program of a home based patient suffering from cancer”. Method: The project group, including fifteen experts (health professionals, patient’s association representative, and other active individuals) met fortnightly. The preliminary risk analysis approach was used. The meetings included brainstorming sessions. After the issues were discussed, the selection of the best orientations/decisions were taken according to the majority of experts attending the meetings. Results: The project started in March 2010 and likely to be completed in 2014. At this stage, the external functional analysis was carried out. This method defines, justifies, rates and organizes in a hierarchy all the functions uniting the participants of the program. The complexity of the work lies in the terminology employed. This modus operandi offers a systemic view of a TPE program and takes an interest not only in the patient but also the program’s stakeholders. Conclusion: Eventually, this project should assist health professionals in developing their TPE programs efficiently. It will help TPE programs meeting the cancer patient’s needs and therefore the Guidelines released by the HAS.
