Résumé

Managing patients' own drugs (PODs) is a daily problem in health care institutions in terms of safety, quality and organizational practices for the clinical wards and the pharmacy department. The objective of this study was to present an analysis of PODs in our hospital. Methods: Descriptive cross observational study performed on 28 January 2015 in seven clinical wards. The PODs management practices were evaluated according to a grid of 12 items based on an analysis of existing procedures and a review of the literature. Patients were included if they had been hospitalized for more than 48 hours, were able to communicate and had signed an informed consent form. Results: Amongst the 130 patients hospitalized in the 7 clinical wards at the time of the study, 77 patients were included and 80% (62/77) had a usual treatment. Of these, 47% (29/62) brought their own drugs. A total of 114 drugs were brought by patients. The drugs were found in the patient's room in 62% (71/114) of cases. Fiftythree percent (61/114) of the PODs were used during hospitalization. For 30% (18/61) of these drugs no hospital prescription was found. Conclusion: This study confirms that the management of personal medicines concerns an important part of patient and these practices are not standardized and secure. The communication of these results to different stakeholders is the first step of a continuous quality improvement process of PODs management.
