Résumé
Hospital pharmacy practice has evolved over the past three decades. Hospital pharmacy surveys are very informative but little known. The objective was to compare the European (E), American (A) and Canadian (C) hospital pharmacy practice surveys. Materials and methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. From websites associations and editorial boards, we consulted the latest publications of surveys of the three geopolitical entities. We identified 19 comparison variables and we analyze their similarities and differences. Results: The latest European survey was published in 2010 and targeted a sample of hospitals in 30 countries (n=4,748). From 2015, the survey focuses on the 44 mission statements of the European association of hospital pharmacists (EAHP). In Canada, the latest survey has just been published in 2015 and targets all Canadian hospitals with at least 50 acute care beds (n=217). It is conducted every two years. The American survey is conducted every three years since 1955. The latest survey was published in 2014 and focuses on a stratified sample of American hospitals (n=1,349).The three surveys also differ in samples of respondents (E)/(C) for all health facilities vs (A) for a stratified random sample), the participation rate ((A) 40% vs (E) 27% vs (C) 78%), the number of questions asked ((E) 87 vs (A) more than 200) and surveyed practices. Discussion/Conclusion: The three surveys on hospital pharmacy practice in Europe, America, and Canada are instructive but little known, disseminated and exploited. The authors suggest that the head pharmacists regularly consult these surveys to ensure consistency in the development of their strategy. By disseminating these surveys and encouraging pharmacists and decision makers to use, we believe that such comparisons can contribute to the reflection and improving practice in each country to serve our patients.
