Résumé
The majority of primary carcinoma of the liver cannot be treated by surgery, and the role of radiotherapy is not defined. Between November 1987 and July 1990, 14 patients (9 men and 5 women with a Karnofsky Index >60%) were treated at IGR. Mean age was 65 years. All tumours but one (cytology IV) were histologically proven: 9 hepatocarcinoma and 4 cholangiocarcinoma. In this study 10 patients had received no previous treatment (Group I) and 4 patients had (Group II). External radiotherapy was delivered with a 18 MV linear accelerator; the dose given to the target volume was 40 to 60 Gy (5 x 2 Gy, 4 x 2,5 Gy). In Group I, 5 patients are alive with a follow-up superior to 3 months (one complete response at 24 months); in Group II, 3 patients are alive with a follow-up superior to 4 months. The radiotherapy was well tolerated, and should be integrated to the treatment of primary carcinoma of the liver.
