    Résumé

Breast cancer screening has been nationally organized in France since 2004. Bilateral mammography is proposed every two years for women aged 50 to 74 years old. In France, the radiologists are present during the first read and perform in parallel breast palpation. If needed, the radiologists can perform immediately breast ultrasound, for diagnostic assessment. Normal mammograms are sent off to the second reading center. Second reading results are sent back to the participant in 15 days maximum. In most of other European countries, the radiologist is not present for the first reading. In addition to this organized screening, individual breast cancer screening may be performed, particularly for women under 50 or above 74 years old. Breast cancer screening allows a 20 to 35 % mortality reduction rate according studies, with an average at 21 %, in case of a minimum 70 % participation rate. In France, the combination of a individual and organized breast cancer screening reaches the level of 65 % participation rate, even if the organized breast cancer screening participation rate is too low, estimated as 50 %. Other screening strategies, as yearly MRI after 30 years old is proposed for high risk women, such as BRCA mutation cancers.
